Since 1997 the international art association SCHMUCK2, established by artist and jewelry maker Susan Pietzsch, situated in the northern German province of Mecklenburg, has served as an interface for international art projects between art and applied art, with special emphasis on new jewelry.

Schmuck2 concentrates on diverse aspects of "jewelery", combining artists, designers and art-theorists. Their projects shape a a multi-faced take on contemporary jewelry, in an unexpected manner thus pushing the border beween art and craft.

CARversation
At Freies Museum Schmuck2 will feature students’ work focusing upon the bizarre connection between cars, jewelry and human nature, developed during a workshop in the jewelry department 'Het Sierraad' at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

Ever since it was invented, the car has not only represented technological ingenuity but also evoked connotations of very human qualities like mobility, freedom and luxury. For many people a car is more than just a mode of transport: it is linked to power and even eroticism. Cars are advertised in terms of pleasure, aesthetics, awareness and flexibility all notions that apply equally to the discourse surrounding jewelry. You could say, then, that both, a car and a piece of jewelry are tools for personal expression.

Students at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie have been exploring the similarities and differences associated with this unusual combination in a workshop together with Schmuck2. The presentation of their findings could be seen before at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie's own exhibition space and the historic Citroén garage on Stadionplein 22-24 in Amsterdam.
